Unable to get simple commands devices to show up in Alexa. Works with Google Home

I am able to get the simple commands to work with my device and I am able to get Google Home to discover the device and use it. Unfortunately, I have tried everything I can find about getting Alexa to discover the device to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

    Bill and Andrew,

Alexa is not currently directly compatible with certain device types, include all types of doors. To enable control of these device types with SimpleCommands you will need to create Routines with each command you want to run with Alexa. After creating these Routines 'discover devices' with Alexa and they will be added to your Alexa environment as Scenes. After that you can turn your Scenes 'on' to run them with Alexa.

For example, if you create on Routine to open a door called "open front", and another to close that door called "close front", you can tell Alexa to "turn on open front" to open the door and "turn on close front" to close it.

Let me know if you still have any questions! If you need help creating a Routine, please see our knowledge base article here: https://simplecommands.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011758574-What-are-Routines-

  • Same here. Can't discover myq garage opener. Let me know if you find anything

  • Hi Bill,

Please try again. I updated the page permissions.

  • I already had 2 routines setup in Simple Command, the Routines is On in the Alexa Companions and the Sync Count shows both of them. However, the Routines do not show up in Alexa app.

  • Bill,

I was able to get it to work! Seems like you may have done everything the same as me do not sure where the breakdown was but here is what I did:

Disable SC home skill on Alexa app

In SC app, setup two routines. Close garage door and open garage door. Each routine did only this action, no time or anything else.

Enable SC home skills and sign in on Alexa app.

Discover devices. Alexa discovered two "scenes" which were my two routines.

That's it! Now I just tell Alexa to "turn on open garage door" or "turn on close garage door"

  • Andrew, John,

Andrew's steps worked. I think the problem was when enabling the SC skill in Alexa, I closed Alexa when I got the message to "close the screen", rather than clicking the back button and letting Alexa discover the "scenes". They now show up in Alexa when I create two new routines, one to open and one to close as "scenes". It works!! YAY!!! Plus I added a pin code.

  • Works with MyQ and Alexa. Here are the steps I used (thanks Andrew):

    1. Setup the devices in Simple Command,
    2. Then create 2 routines in SC, one to open garage door and one to close.
    3. Select the Companions tab, select Alexa, turn on Items and Routines. It should show a Sync Count of 2.
    4. Enable :kloee for SC" skill in Alexa. After logging in to SC, let Alexa discover the "scenes".
    5. Then create 2 routines in Alexa using the "scenes" from SC.
    6. I also added a pin code to the open routine in Alexa for added security.

  • Great! I'm glad you both got it up and running.

  • There's going to be a lot of happy people on the Chamberlain forum. Way to go Andrew and John!!

Just hope Chamberlain does not shut down Simple Commands like they have with others.

  • Bill,

How did you add pin code to Alexa routine in step 6?

    Thanks

  • Having trouble syncing with Alexa and having it see any of the routines created in SC.

I disabled and re-enabled the skill several times with no luck. I also changed password, deleted and created new routines on SC and no luck.

Everytime I have Alexa discover new devices or new scenes it says it doesn't find any. I checked in SC connection and it shows Alexa connected and the routines are synced but in Alexa don't see them and Alexa can't discover them.

I tried creating a new SC account but can't unlink the account. I disable the skill and re-enable it but looks that it maintains the old account w/o having any option to log in to a different SC account.

    Any ideas???

    Thanks!

  • I have the same issue as Penguin2k. All the other steps work without issue but discovery in the Alexa app finds no new scenes.

  • I'm having the same issue as Penguin2k and Josh F. I have tried all the above hints above and still can't get Alexa to see my scenes. 😭

  • Also getting the same issue when syncing with Google Home. I linked it to simple command and can see it connected but Google Home is saying no devices even though routines exist on Simple Command.

So seems there’s a universal issue syncing with Simple Command cloud from either Alexa or Google Home?

  • Worked for me today but had to dig around the Alexa app.  In app, went to devices tab (bottom right) -> '+' -> 'add device' -> scroll down to 'other' -> 'discover devices'

Tried disabling SC and re-installing... definite had to create routines in SC.

    Good luck.

  • Strangest thing. I tried at least 30 times yesterday-disabling, enabling skill, deleting and redownload app, ran discovery and nothing-still would not show up in Alexa scenes. Finally gave up and went to bed. Woke up this morning and there they are. Wish I could help and say what I did, but I didn't do anything, they just appeared! Good luck!

  • Apologies for the inconvenience this issue may have caused any and all of you, but the developers have found the source of this issue and implemented a patch for it. Your Alexa devices should be able to discover your SC items normally. Let me know if you are still experiencing any issues!

    Best,

    John

  • Okay did the exact same thing yesterday and now it’s working. I think it’s an API sync failure previously as I got a 500 error first with an invalid remember-me token error. But now working.

On Alexa app, I just scan again for devices and two scenes (my two SC routines) showed up. I can then create a custom routine using any custom phrase I want to run these scenes.

I then tried on Google Home (iOS) and it also worked but seeing the scenes is way more complex than Alexa.

For Google Home you don’t immediately see the new scenes instead it’s buried when you setup a new routine. I had to open routines>mange routines>create a new routine>under add action choose popular actions>adjust scenes — this where the two SC routines showed up for MyQ.

Very convoluted way to find this in Google Home.

Either case I can now see the two MyQ SC routines inside Alexa and Google Home so can now control my garage with my voice — yeah!

    Hope this help others!

TIP: For added security you can pick an unusual phrase like “open pizza” or “close pizza” when you create your custom routines inside Alexa and/or Google Home. Haven’t found a way to add a PIN code as those are only for locks.

  • I am still unable to get Alexa to recover anything from SC.  Help please, would love to get this to work

  • Steven,

You must first enable the Alexa Companion. You can do this by following the directions here: https://simplecommands.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005574293

After, check to make sure your Alexa Companion discovery settings are correct. You can check them by opening the SC app and pressing Connect --> Companions --> Alexa.

Lastly, adjust the settings as you see fit! Once that is done say "Alexa, discovery devices" to your Alexa device to discover your SC devices.

  • Anyone else having issues with their SimpleCommands Alexa app integration lately?  This stopped working for me about a month ago.  I delted the skill in alexa, reinstalled the simple commands app, re-added the garage door device and re-created the routines.  I install and enable the skill again and Alexa finds nothing.  When reviewing the "Companions" portion of the SimpleCommands app, it tells me to enable the Alexa skill in the app.  I follow the link and it takes me to the Alexa app which shows enabled.  It's as if some update happened to one fo the apps that's preventing communication.  SimpleCommands doesn't see that the skill has been enabled, and Alexa doesn't see the simple commands devices.

I've followed all of the steps above and nothing seems to be working.

  • I also am having problems.  I had no issues until recently.  I go through all the steps and Alexa does not find my device.  I have tried several times, but no luck.
